Working with Kinky Clients: A Clinicians’ Manual (2017)

With the advent of the Internet, those who participate in alternative forms of relationship, gender, and sexual expression have come together as a community and have created a new sexual minority subculture. The clinical needs of this community are different than the traditional mental health client and it is important for all mental health clinicians and healthcare providers to be familiar with the standard of care that may be different in the varied populations that make up this community. This document is the accompanying manual for a pilot Kink Aware Therapy Certification educational program, and it offers a fundamental working knowledge and important clinical considerations and interventions in the treatment of this population-based upon one clinician’s experiences, the current research, and community literature. This companion text also reinforces the growing need for an educational program for mental health and medical providers and further clinical research with this population.

Kink Aware Therapy Certification Program (2017)

A therapist who is Kink Aware recognizes that BDSM, Polyamory, Swinging and other alternative sexual and lifestyle practices are part of the normal sexual spectrum and is able to distinguish healthy sexual play from non-consensual abuse. Kink Aware Therapists (KAT) has additional postgraduate training about alternative sexual expression via, books, articles, continuing education, seminars, websites, etc. KATs are aware what constitutes safe and unsafe play (acknowledging of course that different people have different standards for that). Patsy Evans has been an active advocate and Kink Aware Professional for the alternative lifestyle communities for more than a decade. She is also a public speaker and activist for the sex-positive culture and freedom movement.

The primary mission of KTCI is to educate medical, mental health, and sex education professionals on the proper care and understanding of those who identify as gender, sexual, or relationship outsiders. Our goals are to reduce the stigma associated with the “Kink” community and normalize the concept of sexual outsiders in the hopes of increasing awareness, research, and the quality of healthcare for these special populations.

 Music

Boundless (2002)

Better Angels (2003)

Imagine if Bryan Adams’ airplane crashed into the Goo Goo Dolls tour bus, and a mad scientist grew a musical clone from the wreckage. The result would sound a lot like the music of Jim Evans.

Jim has been performing publicly since the age of 10 with choral groups and as a solo performer. Growing up in the Atlanta, Georgia area, he was influenced by the early days of rap and hip-hop, as well as country music. He began songwriting at the age of 16 and has been refining his craft ever since. During his time as a student at Georgia Tech, he picked up influences from classic rock, played in several cover bands, and began to seriously follow top 40 and alternative music.

After graduating in 1991, Jim found work in the computer software industry, moving to the Seattle, Washington area in 1994. He continued to perform small shows with various groups while trying to find his own voice in the Seattle music scene. In 1997, Jim took a sabbatical from performing to concentrate on his songwriting. He began updating old material, as well as composing new songs with an eye toward entering the recording studio. He formed a record label, Argo Records, and the CD that resulted, Boundless, was released in 2001 and was well-received by critics and fans alike.

In 2002, he began work on a follow-up CD, which became Better Angels. Featuring a much more cohesive sound, and more guitar-oriented arrangements, the CD was released on Argo Records in early 2003 to critical success.
